Invincible: Season 4 is truly one of my favorite seasons of any Tv Show I have ever watched. Robert Kirkman has managed to bring us along this epic adventure with Mark, Omni-man, Debbie, Alan, and Oliver and many more. They have successfully created a storyline that is both consistent with lore, but also intense, exciting, and emotionally driven with powerful character development from Omni-man and Mark in particular. The Voice Acting in this season was excellent this season, and this was particularly highlighted by Lee Pace as Thragg. He gave an incredible performance coming off as both menacing but also wise. Sandra Oh as Debbie was again phenomenal and the chemistry between her and J.K. Simmons was undeniable. This whole season was well written and well acted in my opinion, and even Episode 4: Hurm which was undoubtably the filler episode of the season, it was still enjoyable for me, and contained many funny gags which raised its score for me personally. 10/10 for sure for this category.
The Visual Effects and Film Score each received 9/10’s. This represents in my opinion some of the best visuals the show has ever given us. With powerful and at times breathtaking visuals with this season, it was deserving of this score. The scene that sounds out in particular would be in the 7th episode where Thaedus, Omni-man, and Mark flew through the planet Viltrum. It was visually such an intense scene with incredible visuals, and the fight scenes throughout the end of this season really earned the 9/10. The music was very enjoyable as well, enhancing the scenes and really overall improving the viewing experience. The reason it earned a 9/10 for me was due to the control they had with the sound design with key scenes. The standout example was the fight between Conquest and Mark where they chose to turn off all music/effects and for approximately 3 minutes straight it was just the sounds of Conquest ripping Mark’s guts out. It really added to the brutality of the scene, and made the feat all the more powerful feeling.
The Casting/Set Design/Costumes earns a 10/10 due to the perfect casting for the voices of characters in this show. Lee Pace as Thragg, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Conquest have both been perfect castings. Each providing menace and fear factors for different reasons, but still creating imposing presences on the screen. The costume design bringing back Mark’s classic Blue/Yellow/Navy was a smart decision in my mind, as it helps provide a bit of a brightness to this overly serious toned season. And finally the Set’s throughout the season were detailed, smart, and created beautiful spaces to add to the impact of scenes. The visual of the explosion of planet Viltrum in particular was excellent.
Finally this season earns a 10/10 for Impact for the fact that there was multiple scenes from multiple episodes where I was left with goosebumps and my jaw on the floor. Thragg was an absolute animal. I had seriously underestimated him as a character, and he came through with a bang. I truly don’t know how they are going to be able to effectively power-scale his character as he never once even sustained as much as a scratch. Thragg had one of the, and could be argued that it was the #1 best, best shows of strength I have seen. He was miles ahead of every character we have seen on screen in this universe. But truthfully his display of power was straight up just aura farming. He was awesome to watch. And then Mark, with his display of pain tolerance from the end of his fight with Conquest, is the greatest display of pain tolerance I believe that I have ever seen. Conquest truly was turning Mark’s guts into spaghetti, and it was brutal to watch. Mark’s determination made it all the more impactful though. And finally, the last episode was excellent in my opinion at setting up Season 5, and showing the very real and detrimental psychological effects that someone Mark’s age would experience from going to war. The PTSD scenes really added to his character, and I loved that Thragg forced him to make the decision for the rest of the world on his own. This added to his growth for me as a character.
The last aspect I will note is that J.K. Simmons as Omni-man is a masterclass. He steals the show out of every scene that Omni-man is in, and really this season was more about Omni-man’s redemption arc than it was about Mark’s journey through adult-hood and war. This show is absolutely incredible, and if you loved the first 3 seasons, then you will love this season as well.
